The ALmix Asphalt Cement (AC) Tank Line | Overview

ALmix Asphalt Storage Tank Farm

ALmix Vertical asphalt storage tanks

ALmix produces a wide range of asphalt cement storage options designed for a wide variety of mix producers and operational setups.

Hot oil or electrically heated asphalt storage tanks may be either horizontal (portable) or vertical. Vertical tanks are a popular choice to conserve space at long term-installations. Our horizontal tanks are equipped with portability packages so they can move easily from location to location without sacrificing the variety of features found on our vertical tanks. Metering pump skids and transfer pump skids may be permanently mounted and pre-piped on portable units. Commonly selected options include automated valving, level gauges, fume condensers, nighttime monitoring systems, and more.

ALmix asphalt storage solutions go beyond just tanks; we provide the full package. All tanks and corresponding equipment are manufactured in-house at our facilities. This includes hot oil heaters, AC metering packages, unloading pump packages and skids, calibration tanks, safe sampling systems, and anything your operation needs when it comes to liquid asphalt storage and control. Fully electric AC storage system options are available.

ALmix Vertical AC Tanks | Overview

The ALmix vertical tank design provides all-around insulation of the tank including the top and bottom to ensure optimal heat conservation and economical fuel consumption. Whether you are heating with a hot oil heater or electric elements, ALmix vertical tanks have been engineered for maximum efficiency while maintaining the reliability and durability seen throughout the ALmix line of HMA products. ALmix vertical tank solutions are always optimized for your needs. This means tailored asphalt cement and heating components for your sites, custom hot oil and asphalt cement piping and a quick, turn-key installation.

Why Choose a Vertical AC Tank?

ALmix vertical AC tanks are a highly reliable solution for asphalt storage needs for producers utilizing stationary plants and limited space. With models ranging in capacity from 10,000 - 35,000 gallons, ALmix vertical tanks feature a small overall footprint and convenient AC and hot oil port locations. This eases the addition of more tanks in the future.

ALmix Vertical AC Tanks | Features

  • TANK AGGITATORS: ALmix vertical tanks are designed to work either with virgin asphalts or modifed polymer asphalt products. The optional double-propelled mixer is designed to move more material in less time.

  • VENT CONDENSERS: Are an option designed to help with the reduction of blue smoke emissions from your AC tanks by capturing fumes, reliquifying them and returning the liquid to the tank.

  • RADAR OR BOARD LEVEL GAUGES: Choose from the option of continuous radar level monitoring or a float-type level indicator

  • INTERNAL BAFFLES: These baffles help to keep material in suspension, creating turbulence in the areas close to the tank shell.

  • OSHA-APPROVED LADDERS, PLATFORM & HANDRAILS: Keep your crew safe while working around the AC tanks.

  • AUTOMATED VALVES: Optional automated AC valves allow for the flow of asphalt cement to be controlled remotely from your plant’s control house. Automated hot oil valves direct the flow of hot oil to the AC tank when the temperature controller calls for heat.

  • SAMPLING VALVES: Allows the easy sampling and testing of asphalt cement directly from the tank.

ALmix Vertical Asphalt Cement (AC) Storage Tank

ALmix Horizontal AC Tanks | Overview

ALmix horizontal asphalt cement tanks are designed with many of the same dependable features as our vertical tanks with the added advantage of complete porability. Ranging in sizes from 10,000 - 35,000 gallons, each ALmix portable asphalt tank is insulated with 4” of high-density fiberglass and covered by a pre-painted aluminum skin. Each tank section contains 675 linear feet of circulating coils constructed from 2” tested schedule 40 pipe. Each tank compartment is complete with your choice of 2-4” flanged asphalt connections and 1-2” valved hot oil connections. Each compartment includes a controller to regulate the temperature of the product through electric valves connected to the hot oil lines. Each asphalt tank is fully portable on 5” diameter spring mounted axles with dual tires and wheels, turn and stop lights, fifth wheel pin, air brakes, and mud flaps. Adjustable jack legs with steel foundation plates allow for the unit to to be placed into operation on a compacted surface with no cribbing required.

ALmix Horizontal AC Tank

ALmix Horizontal AC Tanks | Features

ALmix horizontal tanks feature many of the same features designed on our vertical tanks but with the added portability for producers on the move.

  • MULTIPLE COMPARTMENTS: Available for producers who require different storage compartments for different grades or types of asphalt. Bulkheads divide the asphalt tanks. A 3” U-shaped, gravity fed, jacketed and valved connection can be provided to allow the two compartments to be connected and treated as a single storage tank.

  • AUTOMATED VALVES: Optional automated AC valves allow for the flow of asphalt cement to be controlled remotely from your plant’s control house. Automated hot oil valves direct the flow of hot oil to the AC tank when the temperature controller calls for heat.

  • CALIBRATION TANKS: Built-in calibration tanks allow you to calibrate your AC system using a calibration tank mounted above the metering system.

  • TANK AGGITATORS: Availble for producers using modifed polymer asphalt products.

  • METERING SYSTEM: Choose from twin-pump asphalt meters or mass-flow meters, which are conveniently mounted on the rear of the portable AC tank.

  • UNLOADING PUMP SYSTEM: Built-in unloading pumps include pump, motor, strainer system and piping for loading and unloading the AC tank.

  • TANK LEVEL RADARS: Tank level radars are supplied for each storage tank compartment to provide a constant level reading back to the plant operator.

  • TANK-MOUNTED THERMAL/HOT OIL HEATERS: Choose the size of hot oil heater that best fits your heating requiremennts. The ALmix hot oil heater is conveniently mounted to the front of the AC tank for portability.

ALmix Direct-Fired AC Tanks | Overview

ALmix Direct-Fired AC tanks are insulated with 3” of high density fibreglass and covered by a pre-painted aluminum skin. Each tank is heated by a direct-fired burner, which fires into a 20” diameter fire tube to provide heat to the scavenger system, which features 300 square feet of finned coils. The scavenger system includes a positive displacement pump and Y-strainer for pump protection. Burner controls include flame safeguard system, control circuit transformer, flame failure alarm bell and three indicating lights in a NEMA 12 electrical panel.

The line of ALmix direct-fired tanks is designed with many of the proven features and options seen on our portable AC tanks, including built-in calibration tanks, transfer pump systems, metering systems, tank level radars and automated valves.

ALmix Hot Oil Heaters | Overview

ALmix AC tanks using thermal oil for heat will utilize a hot (or thermal) oil heater from ALmix. The fully automatic unit is complete with heat exchanger, circulating pump, burner, expansion tank, manifold and control system. The helical coiled tube heat exchanger provides for a controlled flow design of maximum thermal efficiency. The coil is schedule 40 seamless pipe close wound and welded and is placed in the heater so that it can expand and contract without fatigue cracking. The last two turns are spaced approximately one inch apart to allow for thermal expansion. The hot gases make a return pass over the outside of the coil and exhaust through the stack at the burner end of the heater. This 12 in. diameter stack includes rain cap with screen and high temperature limit control. The shell of the heater is fabricated from 3/16” steel plate and is lined with 2” thick high temperature ceramic fiber blanket. Front and rear doors provide access to the coil. The rear door includes a sight glass for viewing the flame pattern. The 80 gal. expansion tank is provided mounted, piped and wired to the heater shell. The expansion tank includes two lines with valves piped to the tank for purging the system during startup. The expansion tank also includes low oil cut off and sight level gauge.
